Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Competition

Introducing an exciting opportunity for high school students in Virginia’s 4th Congressional District. This year will mark the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Competition, which was established by Congress in 2013. Similar to the Congressional Art Competition, the STEM competition challenges high school students in each Congressional district, tasking them with a specific project and objective in a related STEM field.

The 2014 competition will be in the field of Computer Science. Participating students will develop an app on a platform of their choice (iPhone, Android, Linux, etc.). All completed applications will be submitted via video presentation, to be reviewed by a panel of judges based on certain criteria.

The competition is open to all students who are at least 13 years of age (as of February 1, 2014) and are eligible to enroll in a high school located in Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District. If students attend school outside of their home congressional district, they may compete in either their home district or their school district. Participants may compete individually or in teams of up to 4 students.

Timeline:
February 1st – Contest opens (Students able to submit apps)
April 30th – Contest closes (Deadline for entry submissions)
May 30th – Competition winner(s) selected and notified

Contest Registration and Guidelines
During the Competition Submission Period, participating students must create an account on www.challengepost.com and register for the House Student App Contest. In providing a complete submission, each contestant (or one representative from a team) will be required to provide a link to the Application Demonstration Video, the Developer Video, and an entry form. After the submission period has ended, the submission cannot be modified in any way before the completion of judging. When you add new girls, you extend the opportunity to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The girls currently in your troop also benefit by welcoming a new friend, while a parent or guardian of any new girls may be able to provide you with assistance at troop activities.

Every Girl Scout who invites a new girl to join Girl Scouts is eligible to receive the “Power of One” patch. The new Girl Scout will also receive the patch. Add three or more girls to the troop and all the girls in the troop (including the new girls) will receive the “Power of One” patch.

If you have already submitted an Add-A-Member form for your troop, you may submit another one for new members added between now and April 11,2014.

        Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI)
        National Council Session
        October 16 - 19, 2014
        Salt Lake City, Utah
        $300
        Deadline: February 21, 2014
Ten girls and two adult chaperones will be selected to attend.

What is the Girl Scout Leadership Institute?

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) is a triennial conference that presents girls 14 and older with three days of leadership skill-building activities tied to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). Each GSLI is unique, and the 2014 GSLI is no exception. Girls tell us they want to make a real difference in the world, so this GSLI will focus on big issues about which girls across the country and around the globe are passionate. Girls will get the latest information on their chosen issues from experts in the field, work together on solutions, learn techniques for innovation, advocacy, and planning, and return home ready to make a specific impact in their communities and councils. The GSLI experience will give each girl the opportunity to make new friends, develop important skills, learn about new planning processes and take advantage of a support system that will be there to meet her needs—all delivered in a fun, engaging way. Each girl will also create action plans that will provide her and her council with a significant and lasting return on investment.

        Who can attend?

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute is open to girls 14 and older. GSCCC is selecting a team of ten girls and two chaperones.

Girls who are elected as national delegates are automatically registered for GSLI. The GSLI sessions will be designed around selected issues. Many of the GSLI sessions overlap with the National Council Session, so girls who are elected as national delegates will attend the National Council Session as a delegate and will miss some of their selected issue sessions.
        Facts about the 2014 GSLI

Eligibility: Girls who are 14 or older at the time of GSLI (by October 16, 2014) are eligible to attend the GSLI.
