Living the Girl Scout Promise and Helping Others

Girl Scouts Host Toys for Tots Drive

Nearly 200 Girl Scouts who reside on the Peninsula in Hampton Roads participated in the seasons’ Toys for Tots drive. They collected 672 toys to donate to the Marine Corps program. To help promote the drive and get more girls involved, the Peninsula service units held a friendly competition with the prize being bragging rights. On Saturday, December 15, Corporal Emily Hutchins, the Newport News Marine Corps event coordinator for Toys for Tots, was on site at the GSCCC Peninsula Service Center to accept the donations for distribution. She left with a van filled, from stuffed animals and baby dolls to toy cars and trucks.

“We have over 2,000 families that we are helping this year, each one with two to five children," she said. "We try to make sure that each child gets a couple of toys and that each family gets a board game or two. Collection drives like these have a great turnout. The Girl Scouts did a super job."

Some Girl Scouts troops budgeted money from their fall product sale proceeds to go shopping for the Toys for Tots drives. Other girls got their families involved and came to drop off toys with their parents and siblings.

This is just one of the many community service project efforts area Girl Scouts have been involved with over the past few months. From making hundreds of toiletry kits for children and donating them to the Hurricane Sandy victims to helping the Salvation Army with their gift program, Girl Scouts were eager to help others.

GSCCC Recognizes Famous Former Girls Scouts

Girl Scout Council of Colonial honored twelve local Girl Scout alumnae at a November luncheon. This annual Famous Former event is an opportunity for the Council to recognize women who exemplify the values of Girl Scouts and who are making a difference in their communities. From the arts to the sciences, there are thousands of women leaders who attribute their leadership successes to their participation in Girl Scouting. These outstanding women inspire girls and send a strong message that girls can be leaders.

The Girl Scout Research Institute has found that women who were Girl Scouts display significantly more positive life outcomes than women who were never Girl Scouts. In fact, 64% of today’s women leaders in the United States, including in civic, corporate and political settings, were once Girl Scouts. In a world where only 21% of girls believe they have most of the key qualities required to be a good leader, it is more important than ever to reach out to girls and provide them with strong female role models. The Famous Former Girl Scout Luncheon is an opportunity for key women leaders in the community to be reconnected with the the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and become mentors to tomorrow's leaders!

Pictured from left to right are honorees who attended the luncheon: Community Activist Andria McClellan, Community Advocate Mary Ellen Maxwell; Edenton Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton; Ticatch Financial Management President Marian Ticatch; Urban League of Hampton Roads President and CEO Edith White; Elizabeth City Visitors Bureau Director Charlotte Underwood, Jackson Lewis Attorney Melissa Howell; Chrysler Museum Emeriti Education Director  Ann Vernon; United Way of Greater Williamsburg Executive Director Sharon Gibson-Ellis and GSCCC CEO Tracy Keller.

Not pictured: Honorees Sharon Durrette-Hunt, President of Enspyr, LLC; Dr. Carol Simpson, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Old Dominion University and Rosemary Trible, first lady at Christopher Newport University.

Juliette Gordon Low, Happy Birthday!

Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, was born Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon on October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Ga.

"Daisy," as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was the second of six children of William Washington Gordon and Eleanor Kinzie Gordon. Family members on her father's side were early settlers in Georgia, and her mother's family played an important role in the founding of Chicago, Illinois.

In 1911, Juliette Gordon Low traveled to England where she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, and became interested in the new youth movement. She returned to the United States just one year later to start the Girl Scout Movement – she made a historic phone call to a friend saying, "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and the entire world, and we're going to start it tonight."

She gathered 18 girls together to organize the first two American Girl Guide troops. Daisy Gordon, her niece, was the first registered member. The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year.
